The “Library Board Basics” workshop continues the Branch’s role in delivering training to prepare trustees for their work.
“Library Board Basics” includes critical information on library legislation, the roles of library boards and other players in library service, and responsibilities of library trustees. Funding and finances and other library issues are also covered. The workshops include plenty of group discussions and exercises. “We really tried to make the workshops interactive, because we wanted to encourage trustees to communicate with each other and share their own wisdom,” trainer Ken Feser reported. “Trustees need to find their own strategies and answers to the challenges they face, and their fellow trustees are a great help in doing so.”
Participants in the workshop receive a package including a workbook, other documentation and a USB drive with electronic copies of almost everything a trustee needs. A lunch is also provided - the comfort of participants is foremost on our minds!
Four workshops were presented in the fall of 2011 and were well received. Some comments from participants:
- "It was very informative and there was enough time to have discussions with others around the table."
- “Learned a lot about our board and how to do things the way we are supposed to.”
- “I am taking the USB drive for the whole board to share in the knowledge and to pass on what I’ve learned.”

Dates and locations of scheduled workshops are as follows:
- June 23, 2012 - Lethbridge
- July 7, 2012 - Penhold
- September 8, 2012 - Pincher Creek
- September 29, 2012 - Claresholm
- October 13, 2012 - Drumheller
- October 20, 2012 - Wainwright
- October 27, 2012 - Leduc

The Board Basics workshop scheduled for November 26, 2011 in Airdrie has proven to be very popular. We have now reached our limit for attendees. We do wish to accommodate as many people as we can, so we will be putting subsequent registrations on a waiting list for either the November 26 workshop or - if necessary - a possible additional workshop in the area at a later date.
Don't forget, we have two other upcoming workshops: Viking on November 19, 2011 and Spruce Grove on December 3, 2011. We are working on booking more workshops for dates in the new year, so watch for more announcements!
